4th Satanic Stomp
Date: November 18, 2000
Location: Gutersloh, Germany
Bands: Astro Zombies, Pyromanics, Mad Sin, The Meteors.

When I heard The Meteors were going to perform for the very last time of course I was shocked, but one thing was clear from the beginning: I didn't want to miss that show! The gig, called by the organizers as "The Final Conflict" was in Gutersloh Germany. A very small place, but with excellent location: Die Weberei.

Die Weberei looked like an old factory turned into a nice venue. I arrived at the place at 5pm, the doors were still closed, but the bar belonging to Die Weberi was already open and packed! This looked promising. There were rumors it was already sold out, but that seemed a little odd. When the doors opened it took some time to get in. It was going to be busy at the door for the beginning of the whole evening. It turned out to be one of the better psychobilly nights since a long time. There were supposedly 1300 paying visitors to the festival. Something that most organizers could only have dreamt of the last few years in the psycho scene.

Was it just hype or worth all the trouble? It was an excellent evening. So many people inside, but an excellent athmosphere. No troubles at all. The first band that I got to see were The Pyromanics. They mix swing together with rockabilly and had a great performance. They're a real party band and had a warm welcome even by the psychobilly purists. For their last song they offered the audience fireworks to sing along with a song about pyromaniacs.

After The Pyromaniacs Mad Sin entered the stage and really got the crwod going. Thet played new songs and some clasics like Psychotic Night and the German song Ich Kann Nicht Schlafen. The singer of Mad Sin Kofte bragged he already saw the Meteors live in 1981.

Before the Meteors played the organizer of the festival, Lonesome, asked the audience to squeeze in a little as it was otherwise impossible for all the visitors to see The Meteors. By the time The Meteors were introduced by a bagpipe player the hall was really packed! The Meteors rocked right from the start. No special effects or blood and gore, just a plain old Meteors show. The first few songs immediately included some favorites like Michael Myers and The Crazed. The biggest difference between this Meteors show and the other shows was probably that they played longer and more songs, but also more obscure songs too. I was really suprised to hear Insane from the Wrecking Crew album. Other great songs included Rockabilly Psychosis, and Straigth Down To Hell. There were some problems with guitars, which lead to very original versions of songs with only voice, bass and drums. Uncommon for the Meteors they did a lot of encores. When they played I Don't Worry About It, it really seemed an appropriate end of the show, but the audience decided different and made such a noice that The Meteors came back for a final encore to play their version of the rockabilly classic Wildkat Ways.

And here it is, the final playlist of The Meteors. I can remember they played When The Hills Have Eyes, but either they dind't play Vibrate, or I totally missed it. Too bad they never came to the end of the list as they sure didn't play Rythm Of The Bell!

The Wreckingpit would like to thank The Meteors for bringing psychobilly to the world and for keeping the flame alive for over 20 years!

Thanks Michelle for the pictures!
