The Guana Batz in Den Bosch

Bands: Guana Batz, The Monsters, Hot Boogie Chillun', Los Cheatos
Place: Willem II in Den Bosch The Netherlands
Date : 27-5-1999

I arrived early enough to see the first band Los Cheatos, but it was such a beatiful day that everybody was standing outside, and so I started talking to friends first before entering the Willem II. I already had seen Los Cheatos the other month when they opened for Batmobile in Arnhem (where Batmobile gave the best psychobilly gig this year so far). Los Cheatos is a good surf band, but they were unfortunate to open at 8:00 or something. Standing outside I already guessed the Willem II would almost sold out. For a Dutch festival on a friday night it was really busy. Wim who had organized the event told me later there had been 350 paying visitors. The first band I saw was Hot Boogie Chillun'. I had the idea that they had changed a lot in style. In stead of playing the rockabilly I expected it was more 60's garage, complete with Sonics covers. The Monsters continued this garage tradition only not as polished as Hot Boogie Chillun. They played a very raw version of Lonesome Town (in a true Cramps tradition). After that song they woke up the audience with a fast punkrock song. I whish they had played more of those! After the Monsters everybody was getting restless to finally see a psychobilly band. And they played: The Guana Batz. Immediately the wrecking started and wouldn't slow down the whole concert, not even on their slower songs like Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire. The Batz played just as in the old days, only now Pip's tattoo on his back is finally finished. Everybody was enjoying the show. Highlight was definately "King Rat", which made the whole hall go mental. Well I hope it won't take the Guana Batz more than 6 years or so to visit our country again, and that next years festival in Den Bosch will be as much a succes as this one!
