Any of you guys ever play music at gigs between bands? Some memorable gigs? Worth the effort or is it a waste? What your set up like? You do records or do you do robots? How do people respond when you play psychobilly? Any of you ever figure out how to make money doing this?
I got some turntables and a mixer I bring to some things, used to bring a laptop and a cd player to plug into the mixer too, but those are still broke so just do records now. Doing a burlesque thing tomorrow at a hot rod show, and will be playing junk all day. Favorite gig was at a city park for some car show, they brought a generator and I set up on the grass.
When I play the garage punk and surf stuff, people don't really care, but everybody always comes up and start yammering when I play psychobilly. |

Have done it at some of the shows I put on in the past. People around here don't usually pay attention either way. When they do it seems to only be to the older rockabilly stuff. Mostly play psychobilly though as that is my preference. Kind of figured after the first couple that no one is really paying attention unless I play Chuck Berry or the like so play whatever the fuck I feel like.
I only use robots for mine as I don't have the right gear to do vinyl. |

well since i'm the head honcho of entertainment at the bar I work at, they get whatever I give 'em whether they like it or not...including psychobilly!
that being said, it goes over pretty well here . (that may not be a good thing though) |

| It goes over well, and I started with records, then switched to digital using a laptop and digital turntables and a mixer, because it's easier to lug around a digital setup instead a vinyl turntable setup and a ton of records. Easy to make money at first just by putting out a tip jar with a sign saying "Taking requests for tips". Judge what your going to play by the type of crowd. Look at what types of bands are playing and the type of event. If it's a Pshychobilly gig, play Psychobilly and Punk, if it's a Rockabilly gig, play Rockabilly, Swing, Old Country (Like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, etc). If it's a car show with bands, look at the band lineup and the crowd and base your selection on that. And the golden rule, usually ask the bands to see their set list if possible in case you play something by them so you don't play a sing they are going to perform, because they hate that shit and it makes you look like a moron. |

Ha! Yeah, I generally just keep away from playing anything from any of the bands that are on the bill. Also try to keep away from playing covers that might be in their set and such. I always try and play something a bit different than what is up. So say there is a surf band, rockabilly band, then a punk band. I won't play surf music till after the surf band so I don't steal their thunder. Try to play a wingman to the bands a bit. Usually have an hour set early on in the night where I do whatever I want, then start with the playlists that are modified from the bands later on.
So you use digital turntables? Like that sarroto thing? And how long you been doing the DJ thing, Matt? Had no idea you were into that too |

| I haven 't Deejayed anything in a while, but Sorrato is great if you want to mix like you're using normal turntables or scratch, running dual Soprrato setups is amazing. I started off using vinyl before the whole digital DJ thing hit (I started back in '95) and it was fun, but a pain in the ass lugging around crates of records. The digital DJ setup was a blessing, because you could carry your whole collection on a laptop and setup your Serrato setup and a mixer, and you were good to go.. Less shit to haul around. |

Do you really do scratching and beat matching with psychobilly music??? And are there recordings anywhere? Sounds terrifying, but feel like I need to hear it. |
