So, I had a full 3 piece band when I started. Within a month everyone kinda dropped do to school and having different wants.... I come from a small city where many people usually listen to hardcore or crust/thrash punk. I've talked to a lot of my friends about it they told me I'd have to leave Windsor and settle elsewhere if I wanted to find what I'm looking for.... I don't have the income to move and several people who show interest are out of the city and in a town close by. I was wondering has anyone encountered an almost stigma toward psychobilly? I mean I want to do a more oldschool sound but a lot of others want another Nekromantix or Tiger Army.....

Thoughts opinions?

Have often heard of the more "traditional" rockabilly enthusiasts complain I do too many psychobilly shows and not enough "real" rockabilly. Mind you this has never been said to my face and it seems they only want to hear nostalgic 50's cover bands play.

Around here though psychobilly gets just as much love from many of the punk kids as any other style.

Dan you bring up a viid point. Although, my problem is more with a community revolved around hardcore and metalcore. Although both are very different there's really nothing for younger kids who don't like either or. Most people in my area are not familiar with psychobilly and when I try to make it engaging for people they tend to tune out.

In my city many people don't even know what rockabilly is and I find myself in a very ignorant city.

wait a minute...if nobody in your area's into psychobilly, and you're not prepared to travel out of your area for the sake of playing...where do you intend to play gigs?
I mean, surely even if you get a band together nobody in your area'll want to hear you, so you'll have to travel out of your area to gig.
I don't see the point you're trying to make here....

Doesn't sound like a stigma against it at all, more people don't know and don't care.

A lot of people I've met don't go to shows because it's all metalcore and hardcore. They want something different, however I was playing on playing a lot in the states because I'm so close to the bridge that goes to Detroit. Plus I want to start a scene my friend was talking about playing for a year even if you suck you'll build a decent fan base because you offer an alternative. I'm sure Fenech didn't have this much trouble doing what he wanted so chances are I more and likely will have to move to the states sometime in the future.

Oh man, whining about it again... just do what you got to do... bring some bands to your city and start from there... if people doesn't like it, fuck then and move to Detroit... and when you get there, do the same... and if they don't like it... just buy a gun and take a bullet to your head... Laughing Laughing Laughing

You know this is good advice. Thanks I'll go resurrect Simon Brand and start from there.

I was in this position, there had been one or two psychobilly/rockabilly related things happen WAY back when, but i really had to start from scratch in my town, and now I have a dedicated and thriving little scene, it took me playing my ass off, educating my scene and bringing in bigger bands to play. All scene's kind of work the same way, and start the same way. PS, going out of town to play not only helps you and your band but actually can gain you respect back home in your town, which can in turn help your scene grow.

It's not a stigma. It's reality. I mean, maybe some of these people had an interest in psychobilly. Maybe they saw a dvd and said "hey cool, I'll check this out." But instead of instead of anything informative they're stuck watching some cunt fix his hair or tell you what sort of shoes to wear. Or maybe they picked up a book and suffered someones ramblings about the size of the singers vs. the size of the drummer or what not. It's quite possible that if I were to be introduced to psychobilly post 1993, I would have ran as far away from it and it's gayness as possible.

Just one guys opinion.
