Here is my review of the Ukrabilly Bang #7.

In two words - this was the coolest and the greatest festival I've ever been to! The atmosphere, the aura, the vibe - call it as you want - is what makes the Bang what it is for us all - Ukrainian, Russian and other East-European psychos & rockabillies. Truly - THE EVENT of the year, most waited and wanted by everybody out here.

This year for the first time the festival lasted for 3 days (even 5 considering pre-party on Friday and after-party on Tuesday). And for the first time ever we had a honor to have the Kings of Psychobilly themselves on the bill!

Due to family reasons I was there on the 1st and on the 3rd days while my wife attended the fest on the 2nd day.

Day 1 - Saturday, April 30:

Unfortunately I wasn't in time to catch the Rollin' Coffin a Crimean psycho band that I've seen only once before and was impressed by them very much...

I came in while Russians the Creeps were playing their last song - rough and rude neo-rockabilly as far as I can judge by that only song...

Our hometown's psycho-bastards the Dillberriezz kicked a shit out us playing tight as fuck set of their well known hard'n'fast psycho tunes - "Stay with me", "A.C.A.B.", "Maniac ripper" etc - as well as a couple of new songs and a couple of fighting cover-versions such as "Tainted love" and "Should I stay or should I go". They had a good crowd madly wrecking in the pit including me for several numbers...

Ruki'v Bryuki showed up on the stage in new blue suits and as always played selection of their fine rockabilly tunes. The wrecking pit turned into the dance floor full of swingin boogie-woogie dancers.

A hot girl performed her burlesque number along to one of the songs, which led to the band members loosing consciousness Smile this incident can be seen on this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBBQvKzJVsw

Ukrabilly scene veterans Ot Vinta, who are traditionally playing the festival since 2006, pleased the crowd with a lot of new songs from their soon-to-be-released album. Expectedly most of these songs were a mix of 'billy and Ukrainian traditional melodies. Of course guys didn't forget about their classic hits from the older albums like - "Svynia" ("The pig"), "Kobyla" ("The mare"), "Rok-n-rol dlya cherepah" ("Turtles Rock'n'roll") and the ukrabilly anthem "Ty kazala u nedilyu..." ("You said on Sunday...")!!! Heartily welcomed by the audience Ot Vinta had a big crowd both wrecking and jiving in the pit. And of course we performed a snake dance during the "Turtles Rock'n'roll" creeping all through the venue Smile

I was looking forward to seeing and hearing the Ati Edge & the Shadowbirds because they issued one of the best psychobilly albums in 2010 and I was excited to hear these songs alive; and because I remember them playing at the 4th Ukrabilly Bang - I was impressed then... This time I was amazed by this Hungarian trio even stronger - they did hell of a show playing all the excellent songs from their "Rockin' and Shokin'" CD and several more ones. The wrecking was massive and tough, sometimes almost turning into the fighting... The Shadowbirds were playing so damn hot that that were forced to take off their Jasonvoorhees-masks and we surprisingly realized that they are the Silver Shine as large as life! Smile... Big thanks to Ati, Krista and Furo for one of the best sets on this festival, especially for my favorite numbers such as "Leatherface", "Shadowbirds came to this town", amazing version of the "Surfin' Bird" (they played it on encore) and my absolute favourite in their repertoire, the song about Bruce Willis "Cannibal Stomp"!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFFtzgOJ_Kk - Ati Edge & the Shadowbirds "The Shadowbirds Came to This Town"

After the Shadowbirds we had an entracte long enough to cool down and dry out ourselves a bit after the sweaty wrecking and prepare for the main act of the day.... tada-dada-dada-dadam!... the ones whom you can hardly imagine to see in Ukraine 5-10 or even 2-3 years ago... the Kings of Psychobilly - THE METEORS!!!
It was an absolute blast, a total pizdets in the best meaning if this word! To see with my own eyes that insane man who started all this madness 300 years ago, to hear with my own ears those songs which were heard 100 years ago in a rare radioprogrammes, to wreck in a huge crowd full of familiar faces, to sing and shout along on every song - this feeling of happiness and euphoria is hard to express with just the words... All weaved into the one song - "Mutant rock", "These boots...", "I hate people", "Little red riding hood", "Rawhide", "Slow down your graverobbing bastard", "My kinda rockin", "Disneyland", "Maniac", "Graveyard stomp",.... Endless "we want more, we want more!" - 3 or 4 encores, 2 songs each one!... And of course the culmination of all this hell - the anthem - "WRECKIN' CREW"!!!
My voice became hoarse, my hands turned into two entire bruises, my brains flew away into the unknown direction.... I even knocked no one less than Pete Gorilla in the wrecking couple of times, I tell ya! Smile

Not only us, punters, enjoyed the show, but Mr.Fenech and his guys visibly enjoyed it too and said many words of gratitude to promoter, to organizers and to all of us, psychos on the fest. The thunderous applause and the sing-along "No one like us, no one likes us,... but we don't care!..." had followed the band long after they went off the stage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c81OlLIY-Hw - The METEORS "My Kinda Rockin'"

It was the first time the Meteors played in Kiev, but I hope not the last one. Looking forward to seeing them again in our country!

Day 2 - Sunday, May 1:
Unfortunately I missed it, my wife Marina went on instead of me. (We could not make it together because nobody wanted to look after our children those days...)

Anyway, the band she was mostly wating for were the Cheekybenders and she said that their comeback after 2.5 years pause in a renewed line-up was total success!
Also other bands were top - including the headlining acts Stressor, Round-Up Boys and awesome Gorilla

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0KkgIsMroc - Stressor "Jungle Rock"

I hope someone who was there will add more interesting and detailed report of what had happen on the 2nd day of the Ukrabilly Bang...

Day 3 - Monday, May 2:
I've missed the opening band of the day - the High-Tones - rockabillies from Moscow.

But was right in time to catch our very own Kiev-based psycho band Outer Space. Of course people on the 3rd day of the festival were not so active as on the 1st day (constant alcoholic intoxication, hangover, bruises everywhere, etc), but Val and two Serges managed to get a decent number of us into the wrecking pit. Guys played a solid set of energetic, tough, but at the same time melodic songs mostly with Ukrainian lyrics, including their big hits such as "Stariy budynok" ("Old house"), "Schastya v rutsi" ("Happiness in hand") and "Kistlyavi prymary" ("Bony ghosts"). They were forced to reduce the show a little bit due to problems with double-bass though, so performed only one encore...

I've missed the first half of the Alligators set socializing and drinking with friends... But the second part did impress me very much - a good old rockabilly played with high energy and nice to dance to!

The next band - Freno de Pedales - the veterans of the psycho scene from Crimea, the very South of Ukraine - did a sensational comeback a year before at the Bang'2010. So this time we all were ready to get a good portion of ass-kick psychobilly prefaced by the "preachment" from Moses the Magnificent, the band leader. And Pedales didn't disappoint us at all! The crowd was madly wrecking along to their hard'n'fast paced hits "Fisher's song", "My eyes", "Merry Cook", and my absolute favourite "Wings & Bombs"... Great performance, not worse than a year ago, but we want new songs for the future.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU1ZwuQEbm0 - Freno de Pedales "Night Guest"

After this I had a session of drinking again, so to my shame I missed a big part of the WiseGuyz show. In opinion of many they are the best rockabilly band in Ukrain and in the Eastern Europe (and arguably in the Western one too)... It's no wonder that they had a massive dance floor bespangled with lots of swingin' pairs and individuals.

What's important is that I didn't missed the clou of the show - it was a "Crab Bop" - a number featuring singin' Guyz and 5 gorgeous Hawaii-styled dancing girls - check it out on the video - it's a top notch!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO7jVPpVZEg - WiseGuyz "DO THE CRAB BOP!!!"

The band I was waiting that day most of all - the Silver Shine - were to be the next! However I did a strategic mistake - I didn't stop drinking various alcoholic beverages. I just wasn't able to refuse my friends offering me to celebrate their birthday with couple of vodka shots, or simply drink some cognac, beer or something else... So at the time when the Silver Shine started playing I was drinking outside of the venue. Unexpectedly when I tried to enter it the security guys at hte door refused me to enter because I was well over-drunk... Hence I had to spent next 40 or so minutes outside, and when I finally was allowed to be in the Silver Shine were near the end of the set (I think)... It's a total shame that I missed them so stupidly, I can only vaguely remember Krista singing "Emergency" but that's all..

Anyway I'm still cool coz I have their t-shirt and the Shadowbirds CD kindly presented by Ati (thanks mate)! Cool Hoping to see them again either here or elsewhere, I promise I won't be so drunk... Smile
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9rn4CgBMQc - Silver Shine "Run Run Run" + "Dreams"

Nevertheless, by the time the Cherry Casino & the Gamblers went on the stage, the haze in my head dissipated a bit so I was able to perceive what was going on. Lads played a great set of rockabilly/rock'n'roll tunes, very energetic and lots of catchy tunes, and of course with the highest level of musicianship. The crowd including me was dancing like there is no tomorrow!! Guys made I think 2 encores and dedicated one of the songs to Ukrainian girls that where taking care of them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l38_krwFqk4 - Cherry Casino & the Gamblers "Gorgeous Woman"

Unfortunately that was the end... Nobody wanted to go home, nobody wanted to believe that the celebration is over...

It was an excellent event of yet unseen in this part of the Europe caliber, very well organized, with great variety of bands of the highest level from both Psychobilly and Rockabilly scenes. This was supplemented with pre-party and after-party in a smaller venue, burlesque shows, DJs sets, the stalls with good variety of music, t-shirts and stuff, the football match Ukrabilly vs The World (4:3)....

The event which is anticipated passionately by people here every year.
The meeting of friends and like-minded freaks from all over Ukraine, different parts of Russia, Belorussia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and other countries.

Thankfully to Alex Twaryna (the main organizer and promoter) and his supporters the festival is going from strength to strength every year - so looking forward to the next year's Bang!!!

thanks Uana!
we're having a 2010/2011 concert's season closing party (all night long, 6 bands) this Saturday, summer is kinda 'dead season' here - just small solo gigs in pubs primarily by rockabilly bands... so more great shows will continue in autumn, winter and next spring...
