The Chills - Something to Die For (Western Star Records)
Featuring former members of such seminal rock'n'roll outfits as The Krewmen, The Radiacs, New Model Army and the Blue Devils, its pretty fair to say that amongst fans of the genre, The Chills debut release is one of the most anticipated records of the year. And my God, this album does not disappoint! Released through Sharks mainman Alan Wilson's Western Star label, 'Something To Die For', is 12 tracks of bass-driven sleazy rock'n'roll fury; a fuzzy rampage tipping its hat to everything that is good about rock'n'roll. If I were a lazy reviewer, I'd say that this is the middle ground between The Cramps, the Meteors and The Tallboys, but there's much more to it than that; the fuzzed up pounding bass, tight drumming, reverb-heavy guitars like a dual between Dick Dale and East Bay Ray topped with the kind of eerie vocals that would make Christopher Lee piss his knickers like a big girl make this an unrelenting and unsettling aural assault. The album maintains a brutal garage-punk sound throughout, but a surf-meets-country instrumental (Hot Dang Hee Haw) adds a touch of the Man Or Astroman, and the choice of covers (Death-ballad classic Endless Sleep, and the Dead Kennedys' Let's Lynch the Landlord) works brilliantly. If you like your music stripped-down, honest, raw and energetic then this album is for you. Get a copy now and catch 'em live if you get the chance, they're an absolute blast.
Aye nice one Liam...good review and you Stu .....Once ive been on here im gonna order it from Western star...............Seen em up here in Whitley bay and to be honest the sound was really bad for them which pissed me off a little as they are a great band......

I can't wait to hear the Epileptic Hellbillys demo thingy thats coming to me ( cheers Jo ! )
You wont be disappointed. They're back recording again next week so hopefully an album from them wont be too far away. They're also supporting The Meteors at the Mansfield gig next week and again in Sheffield in December. Certainly think they'll be ones to watch out for next year. check out a couple of their tracks on their myspace
Bought this album after reading a few things about it, and on Billy's recommendation, well got to say this is one of the best cd's I own, and I am not just sayin it cause Billy is a mate.
Just hope The Chills do something in the near future when he has time in-between the Epileptic's hectic schedule.
Get it bought, u will not be sorry.
