The back cover of The Quakes Negative Charge shows singer/guitarist Paul Roman and bassist Kenny Hill playing to a crowd of bored and disinterested-looking goths. I’m not sure what song they were playing at the time but i can’t imagine it would be one of the cuts from this album.

Negative Charge delivers a good selection of up-tempo psycho-rockabilly, sounding polished and crisp throughout.

Opener Seven Seas Alone conjurs up the same images of rolling waves and haunted rigging as the likes of Marie Celeste by the Polecats – an influence freely acknowledged in the album’s liner notes which also credit Restless and Beltane Fire for inspiration on the song. The punky sneer of Master Planned Community is another early highlight, while fast-paced rocker Straight to Valhalla sounds tailor made for proper wrecking.

Slower numbers like Ghost Town, Turn on you Tomorrow and Raining All My Life aren’t going to be to everyone’s taste, but they’re atmospheric and well-played. And for their detractors, at least there’s an absence of 80s covers, although the bass line of Ready for War bears at least a passing resemblance to the Cure’s Love Cats, at least to my ears.

Overall, i’m on my third listen now and i have to say, pretty good stuff.

Fun Fact: The album cover is not doctored in any way. Paul Roman can really do that.

Very good album. Far better than previous (Psyops).

I guess that 2 first LPs always will stay my favorites, but this album is also very strong, it impressed me in a good manner.
It's seems to me that music on 'Negative Charge' became more guitar-oriented, I like guitar parties very much. Smile

My favourite songs are - Seven Seas Alone, Just Rock, Master Planned Community, Ready for a War, Straight to Valhalla. And the best one for me - The Spirit of the Cat, very energetic and solid tune! Twisted Evil

The only "minus" of the album - Turn on You Tomorrow reminds me of Beatles Sad
