Any basic guitar book will have good techniques in them, then from that theres a few rockabilly guitar songbooks that aren't half bad.
If you want to steer him towards it, have him start learning 12 bar blues and any other blues oriented stuff, its good for any guitar player to learn, plus its not too hard to learn and just lots of fun to play. That's the stuff i learned first, and still haven't gotten bored of it yet:D |

Hi mate,
I had the same situation with the wee lass some years ago. I play but to be honest the best thing for them at that age is just to learn a handful of simple chords and play around with it. The school may offer lessons although up here the bairn had to take violin 'cause guitar wasn't available. learning ANY other instrument at school, will help them understand structure and patterns, give them a good ear and become confident. Don't know if it's the same in Wales but in Scotland any kid under 16 is entitled to attend local evening classes for free, mine gets 6 hours lessons each week, all free, but all the kids do is bring in ideas and the teacher helps them expand them or learn their favourite tunes - it's frightening, their skill levels improve at an exponential rate... maybe your local college has something ? Even getting one of his mates into guitar will bring them both along.....
BTW - doesn't matter how much of your favourite music you make them listen to, you have to compete with Artic Monkeys, Pigeon Detectives, Kaisers, etc, etc.. you've got no chance... not our taste but they're all that matters to the bairns just now
For what it's worth Oasis seem to be easy tunes for young 'uns to learn, and it's cool for them... |

The younger they are the greater their capacity for learning and the quicker they learn.
I would start with the blues. One thing about kids if they are exposed to it, they catch on quick!! |

It might work, the whole playing things around your kid. My dad played a lot of surf and some earlier rocknroll around me when I was younger. I went through a period of music rebellion with some hardcore punk, but I eventually got my mind straight |

Ditto for me .
You're right though, most of us never lose what first got the hairs on the back of our neck's raised, sometimes you have to go on a journey halfway though. Mine was with Van Halen in late 80's (still in awe of EVH )and various other "metal service poviders" , mostly a guitar thing. Doesn't mean I ain't 'billy at the core.......
I agree Blues are great fun for bairns too - good that you got him proper lessons, they're not cheap.... |

Let him see this guy too, he's from Australia, I took the bairn to see him in Glasgow last November, rarely hear perfection on live accoustic like this, we still rave about his concert......
