Hellís Bent on Rockiní by Craig Brackenridge
Fed up with psychobilly being ignored by the mainstream music press, Craig Brackenridge (Bracko) set upon his epic journey, lasting over 3 years, to produce the most comprehensive history of psychobilly that youíre ever likely to find.
Obviously starting in London in the 1980ís he takes you all over the world throughout the 80ís, 90ís, and into the millennium years. Showing no bias towards his favourites, every band is given ample coverage to document their history, discography (even including key artwork on the album covers) and ever changing band members in many cases. It also pays homage to many of the bands that fell under the rockabilly and garage/trash banners, that were so important to many of us.
The scene would have been nothing without the promoters and independent record labels, and their involvement in the scene has not been underestimated, along with the fanzines and websites that have come and gone over the years. Key venues and festivals are also mentioned throughout the book.
Thereís chapters dedicated to the evolving style of itsí patrons and their induction into psychobilly, showing quite how many different paths people took to find a lifestyle that would stay with them for many years.
Hellís Bent is not just a trip down memory lane that evolves around the UK (in fact itís quite a geography lesson) but a well researched and well written MUST HAVE for any psycho new or old. Even the most avid fan is going to find something in there they didnít know before. But be warned itís not a 5 minute read. Had the text not been so small, this book would have easily been double the thickness. As it is youíve got over 230 pages jam packed with information and over 150 photos. Out on Cherry Red early November.
