Starting off with a woman singing Mary Had a Little Lamb with a drunken sounding chorus in the background, the image of Gremlins singing Christmas carols in the 80's movie came to mind. The frantic, chaotic psychobilly that followed isn't far off. At about 20 seconds in the real first track kicks off with racing rhythms, fast guitars and vocals that bring to mind Mel Robbin's or Johnny Carroll's frantic style, just a hair's breath from losing control.
As the album progresses a constant feel of chaotic rock and roll sticks with you throughout the slower tracks as well as the faster stuff. Some nice bluesy sounding guitar work in a number of tracks keeps a balance between the the dirty, dark rock bringing an energy that keeps me moving through the whole album.
The one critical bit I have is that I am not a big fan of the mix. I had to adjust my EQ a bit to get it just right. I feel the guitars are a bit buried leaving it a bit muddled and disjointed before adjustment. Your mileage may vary on that end though.
Stand out tracks for me are In The Name Of The Lord and Fire Fire Fire.
I wouldn't call this "traditional" psychobilly by any means, but definitely an album worth grabbing for any fans of dirty, swaggering, rockin' music.
I would give it a 7/10. Would have rated higher if I agreed with the mix, but I am half deaf so feel free to ignore that.
Sorry this review is months late. I am a lazy fuck and pretty bad at this.
Thanks, Dan. You said that you suck at reviews, but I say that's fairly ok job... I'll give you 7/10
I wouldn't call it traditional psychobilly either... it's just our version of psychobilly... vulturizedbilly or something... sound that comes out when 4 empty skulls bang together. My fave songs on the album must be Get On, Armageddon and Superdoom because of the stupid lyrics.
Still waiting for Boozey's review... are you so polite that you don't want to write a negative review or so honest that you can't tell a lie?
